Cardiovascular Regenerative Engineering Laboratory

The Cardiovascular Regenerative Engineering Laboratory is focused on developing next-generation treatments for cardiovascular diseases.  Our strategy is to develop living tissue replacements using regenerative engineering and biomedical nanotechnology approaches.  Such living tissues have the capacity for remodeling, repair, and growth and offer substantial safety, efficacy, and durability advantages compared to current treatment options.  We are particularly interested in developing living blood vessels, cardiac valves, vascular patches, and cardiac patches.  We work as a team of engineers, scientists, and clinicians to address the needs of patients suffering from diseases including coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, vascular disease, and congenital heart disease.

About Regenerative Engineering

Regenerative engineering is a multidisciplinary field that seeks to generate living tissue replacements for diseased or damaged tissues.  These tissues are typically comprised of the patient’s own cells seeded within a biomaterial scaffold.  The nascent tissue construct is nurtured under controlled conditions to mature into a mechanically and functionally mature tissue.  The tissue is designed to elicit a favorable regeneration response upon implantation into the patient such that natural form and function are completely restored in the long term.
