CSBL Graduate Student Wins Biophysical Society Travel Award
December 19, 2025
Yisak Asefa, graduate student in the CSBL, was selected as a recipient of the 2026 Biophysical Society Travel Award, granted by the Biophysical Society. This competitive award supports early career researchers and trainees by providing travel funding to present their research at the Biophysical Society Annual Meeting. The award is based on the scientific merit of the submitted abstract and its relevance to biophysics, as well as the applicant’s career stage and engagement with the Society.
The award supports Yisak's abstract presentation at the 70th Biophysical Society Annual Meeting, to be held February 21–25, 2026, in San Francisco, CA. His research focuses on computational and mechanistic modeling of mitochondrial calcium dynamics, aimed at understanding how calcium transport regulates cellular energetics and contributes to disease-relevant physiological processes.
Yisak is currently a PhD student and Research Assistant in the Computational Systems Biology Laboratory at the Marquette-MCW Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. His research focusses on biophysical modeling, mitochondrial ion transport, and PBPK modeling. His work is conducted in close collaboration with fellow CSBL members under the mentorship of Dr. Ranjan Dash.
