NMCL Paper Accepted for Publication
February 2026: Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience recently accepted a new NMCL paper with PhD Candidate Rocky Mazorow as first author. The paper, entitled "Utility and user experience with 3-dimensional vibrotactile kinesthetic feedback for improving reach-to-grasp accuracy and efficiency after stroke: A case series" will be available for download in the next couple of weeks. Congratulations, Rocky!
M.S. Student’s Poster Places 1st and is Awarded MU Travel Award
February 2026: Congratulations to M.S. student Corey Huffman on placing 1st in the Master’s category of the 4th annual MU Graduate Research Poster Competition with his poster, Response labeling and model evaluation for rehab activity recognition in post-stroke patients. He also received a $250 travel award to showcase his research at an upcoming conference. Congratulations, Corey!

- August 2025: Drs. Scheidt and Morelli have been awarded grants from the National Science Foundation for a project titled, “Collaborative Research: A Machine Intelligence Assessing Motivation, Adapting Challenge, and Fostering Compliance with Cued Therapeutic Activity After Stroke.” Congratulations, Drs. - July 2025: Dr. Devon Lantagne successfully defended his PhD Dissertation titled "Interactions of explicit and implicit memories on sensorimotor adaptation and after concussion". Congratulations, Devon!
- March 2025: The journal Applied Sciences recently published a new NMCL paper with Dr. Bassindale as first author. The paper, entitled "Feasibility and User Experience of a program of progressive cued activity to promote functional upper limb activity in the inpatient rehabilitation setting with follow-up at home." is available for download online. - 2025: Keira Kellar is a junior undergraduate student studying biomedical engineering with a focus in bioelectronics. She has been with the NMCL for about a year, contributing to a range of ongoing graduate projects in whatever capacity is needed — from building hardware components to data collection, sorting, and analysis. Working alongside the lab's graduate students and faculty has facilitated an eye-opening introduction to the field of research. Welcome, Keira Kellar!

- December 2024: The Journal of Neurorehabilitation recently published a new NMCL paper with Masters Student Jake Horder as first author. The paper, entitled "Utility and usability of a wearable system and progressive-challenge cued exercise program for encouraging use of the more involved arm at-home after stroke - a feasibility study with case reports." is available for download online. - June 2024: Dr. Robert Scheidt named next Rev. John P. Raynor Endowed Chair at Marquette.
- August 2022: Dr. Robert Scheidt of the NeuroMotor Control Laboratory, and his collaborator have received a two-year, $427,772 grant from the National Institutes of Health, Institute of Child Health and Human Development, for the project, "Addressing arm non-use by encouraging idle-time activity during early recovery from stroke."
- September 2021: Dr. Bob Scheidt, along with Dr. Scott Beardsley, Dr. Leigh Ann Mrotek, and Dr. Kristy Nielson, has received a two-year, $420,750 award from the National Institutes of Health for the project titled, “Neural mechanisms of error correction during manual interception of moving targets.”
- June 2020: The Journal of Neurophysiology recently accepted a new NMCL paper co-authored by Dr. Robert Scheidt. The paper, entitled "The Neural Foundations of Handedness: Insights from a rare case of deafferentation," will be available for download in the next couple of weeks. Congratulations Dr. Scheidt!

- April 2019: Congratulations to graduate student Devon Lantagne on winning the Program Chairman's Award at the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Symposium for his paper, The Contribution of Sensorimotor Memories to Implicit Motor Learning After Concussion.
- March 2019: Dr. Mrotek has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for a project titled, “IRES Track 1: Physical State Estimation for Control Coordination and Behavior Monitoring.” Congratulations, Leigh Ann!
- March 2019: Linda Lastrico, Giovanni Pilia, and Alessio Stochino have all joined the NCML from the University of Genoa, Italy. They will conduct their Masters Degree research projects here at MU-MCW. Welcome Linda, Alessio, and Giovanni!

- Jan 2019: Devon recently passed the written section of the doctoral qualifying exam. He will complete the oral section in Fall 2019 in hopes of obtaining his Ph.D. candidacy. Great job, Devon!
- Aug 2018: Dr. Mrotek has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation (in collaboration with Dr. Rajiv Ranganathan from Michigan State University) for a project titled, Optimizing Motor Coordination using Principles of Motor Re-learning.
- Jul 2018: Valay passed the dissertation qualifying exam and successfully proposed his dissertation research, Learning to Use Vibrotactile Sensory Augmentation to Control the Arm, and advanced to Ph.D. candidacy. Congrats Valay!
- Feb 2018: Giulia Ballardini has joined NMCL from the University of Genoa, Italy, as a Visiting Research Technician. Welcome Giulia!
- Dec 2017: Maria Bengtson successfully completed her Ph.D. dissertation, Muscle Coordination Contributes to Function After Stroke: Proprioception Contributes to Control of Position, Movement.
- Oct 2017: Dr. Scheidt has joined the National Science Foundation as a Program Director for the Mind, Machine and Motor Nexus (M3X) Program within the Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation Division of the Engineering Directorate. He will continue active research and co-direction of the lab in partnership with Dr. Mrotek under an IR/D plan supported by NSF grant CMMI-1801216.
- Oct 2017: Giovanni Huang successfully completed his MS thesis, Influence of Vibrotactile Sensory Augmentation on Motor Performance and Proprioception in Three-dimensional Reaching Tasks.
- Oct 2017: Francesca Bucci successfully completed her MS thesis, User-centered Design of an Ubiquitous Cueing Wearable Device to Improve Limb Awareness After Stroke.

- Jun 2017: Drs. Mrotek and Scheidt were awarded a 3-year NIH R15 grant titled, Augmenting Kinesthetic Feedback to Improve Hemiparetic Arm Control After Stroke.
- May 2017: Dr. Casadio, in collaboration with Dr. Scheidt was awarded a two-year EU Erasmus KA107 award to support student, faculty and staff mobility between the University of Genoa (UniGe) and Marquette University.
- May 2017: Nicoletta Risi was awarded the prestigious SIAMOC Best Thesis Award for a thesis in the field of movement analysis in a clinical environment. Congratulations Nicoletta!
- April 2017: Valay Shah has been awarded a prestigious Whitaker Foundation International Fellowship to pursue an Aim of his Doctoral Degree, which will strengthen the strong collaboration between the NMCL and Dr. Maura Casadio’s lab at the Università degli Studi di Genova, Genova, Italy.
- Oct 2016: Nicoletta Risi successfully completed her MS thesis, Supplemental vibrotactile feedback of limb position enhances goal-directed reach performance.
