The Medical College of Wisconsin's Cardiovascular Center is dedicated to enhancing cardiovascular health in Southeast Wisconsin and beyond. Their mission encompasses advancing cardiovascular research, providing cost-effective and high-quality healthcare, and fostering rigorous training for the next generation of diverse and proficient cardiovascular scientists and physicians. As part of these efforts, they organize a recurring research retreat, which features a keynote speaker and poster sessions.
During this year's poster session, Shashanka Rao, a postdoctoral fellow in the Cardiovascular Regenerative Engineering Laboratory (CaRE Lab), secured third place in the postdoctoral category for his poster presentation. Titled "Endothelial cells with low fibronectin leucine rich transmembrane protein 2 (FLRT2) expression exhibit enhanced retention within vascular grafts," the poster was a collaboration between Dr. Rao and recent BME Graduate Dr. Jayne Wolfe. Funded by a NIH grant through Dr. Brandon Tefft's CaRE Lab, this project is about endothelialization of commercially available vascular grafts used for bypass surgeries. Dr. Shashanka accepted his award with the support of CaRE Lab members Alexander Armstrong, Dr. Brandon Tefft, and Aleks Zielonka, pictured above.
