Report a Problem
In an effort to further support the development of necessary professional skills amongst our students, the Marquette-MCW Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering hosts professional development workshops on an ongoing basis. Workshops target hard and soft skills critical to the success of any biomedical engineering professional. Participation is open all current graduate students. Lunch is often provided.
Led by Professor Joseph T. Barbieri, this one-hour workshop will focus preparing graduate students for the written portion of their Doctoral Qualifying Exam, which involves crafting an NIH F31-style grant proposal. Participants will take a deeper look into constructing a project summary, specific aims page, and research strategy.
In an effort to reach as many of our students as possible, this workshop will be held during the regular Graduate Seminar Series date and time slot.
Lunch will be provided!

Story Ready with Janece Shaffer
Stories are critically important for engineers. Stories help identify opportunities and ensure that active projects are on target to make a difference. Good stories can inspire and motivate people to join a cause, to lend their talents to a project, and to bring forth new leadership.
Led by award-winning playwright Janece Shaffer, who has more than two decades of business experience as a content developer and marketer, this three-hour workshop aims to inspire students to reflect, connect the dots, and set their sites on the “big picture”. Students can expect to come away with a greater self-awareness, as well as outlines for stories for future developoment or immediate dissemination.
The Story Ready workshop will be held over Zoom to allow for one-on-one coaching and the most flexibility so that all may attend! An in-person social component will be built into the end of this workshop to allow students to come together, reflect, and use the skills that they learned.

Fierce Conversations with Andrea Minkley
The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is thrilled to welcome Associate Director of Engineering and Innovation Leadership Development, Andrea Minkley, as our workshop facilitator. In this two-part, half-day workshop, Andrea will coach students through the relationships of having a conversation while effectively addressing attitudinal, behavioral, or performance issues with a colleague, mentor, or team.
Registered students will have access to workshop materials, a workbook to keep, as well as their own copy of the national bestselling book, Fierce Conversations, by Susan Scott, which will serve to guide the workshop.
