The Joint Department Welcomes Dr. Chrisopher Pawela
October 12, 2026
The Marquette-MCW Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher Pawela to Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Pawela received his BS in Bacteriology and his MS in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and earned his PhD in Biophysics from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Over the last eighteen years, he has held a range of faculty and academic appointments at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. He also co-founded Brain Connectivity, an internationally recognized journal focused on neural network research and neuroplasticity, and served as its Editor-in-Chief until 2019.
Dr. Pawela's current research is supported by a VA Merit Review Award from the Brain Behavioral and Mental Health section of the Department of Veterans Affairs Research & Development Service for the project titled, "Optimized Targeting of Brain Pain Matrix with Neuromodulation." This research integrates functional neuroimaging with behavioral and physiological measures to understand how injury and disease alter brain activity and underlying connectivity. His work examines neuroplasticity and cerebrovascular physiology, with recent research focused on peripheral nerve injury and chronic pain. He investigates neuromodulation and neuroaugmentation as approaches to modify brain networks, preserve connectivity after injury, and improve outcomes.
On behalf of the Marquette and Medical College of Wisconsin Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, welcome!
