BME Welcomes Dr. Hu Yang, New Chair of Biomedical Engineering
July 7, 2025

The Marquette and Medical College of Wisconsin Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is pleased to welcome Hu Yang, PhD, as Chair of the Marquette University (Marquette) and Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, effective July 1, 2025. He has been appointed as a Professor with Tenure and hold the Dr. Robert D. and Dr. Patricia E. Kern Professorship in Biotechnology.
Dr. Yang received his undergraduate degree in polymer material and engineering from Sichuan University in China in 1998, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in chemical engineering from the University of Akron in 2004. He completed a postdoc in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2005.
Dr. Yang’s research interests include pharmaceutical engineering, biomaterials, and drug and gene delivery. He is internationally known for his interdisciplinary research in blending pharmaceutics with engineering to create a new generation of therapeutics and formulations for cancer therapy, ocular diseases such as glaucoma and cardiovascular disease such as atherosclerosis. Dr. Yang’s research also explores non-invasive routes of administration for chronic disease medication management, such as for diabetes.
Most recently, Dr. Yang served as Chair, Professor and the Linda and Bipin Doshi Endowed Chair in the Linda and Bipin Doshi Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo.
Dr. Yang is a passionate advocate for education and has served as a mentor to more than 46 medical, graduate and PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, as well as on the dissertation and thesis committees for numerous students.
Dr. Yang currently serves as an Associate Editor for Research and MedComm—Biomaterials and Applications and on the editorial board for various journals including the Journal of Biological Engineering and Bioactive Materials. Dr. Yang is ranked in the top two percent of the world’s most cited scientists in biomedical engineering, pharmacology and pharmacy for career-long impact, according to a 2023 Stanford University Report. He has published more than 100 articles, original papers, book chapters and reviews, and has presented at more than 130 local, regional, national and international lectures and workshops. He holds five issued patents. Additionally, Dr. Yang has held numerous local, regional and national leadership positions in biomedical engineering.
Dr. Yang was selected for this role after a comprehensive national search led by the MCW recruitment team. We would like to extend our gratitude to Francesca Marassi, PhD, Chair of Biophysics at MCW and Anne Clough, PhD, Chair of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Marquette, who served as Co-chairs of the search committee—as well as to the full committee membership—for their unwavering dedication of time, insights and thoughtfulness in undertaking this key recruitment effort.
Additionally, we would like to share our sincere thanks and appreciation to Frank A. Pintar, PhD, for his valuable service as Founding Chair of the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering since October 2018.
