Members of the Cardiovascular Regenerative Engineering Lab Run/Walk for Heart Health Research

February 18, 2022

Members of the Cardiovascular Regenerative Engineering Laboratory at the Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, who normally spend their days developing solutions to common cardiovascular diseases, came together for a weekend of engagement, health, and remembrance as they participated in the 25th Annual Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Club Run/Walk, held this year on Saturday, February 12th.

The chilly temps didn’t discourage lab members from donning their best gear, bundling up, and spending a morning in the crisp February sunshine for the 8K competitive run. The event is well-attended, hosting more than 700 participants each year, with some participants opting for the two-mile “fun run/walk” in lieu of the 8K. Together, participants have raised over $550,000 to date.

We asked Dr. Brandon Tefft, Principal Investigator of the MU-MCW CaRE Lab, about what this event means to him:

I am very pleased my research group is participating in the 2022 Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Run/Walk. This is a great opportunity for our group to connect outside of the lab while participating in a fun event.  Running and walking with others is a great way to maintain cardiovascular health!  More importantly, my group works to develop next-generation treatments for cardiovascular disease, and we are excited to participate in an event to support this important cause.

About the Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Club

The Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Club Run/Walk started in 1997 in memory of former Milwaukee Alderman, Steve Cullen, who tragically passed away at just age 40 of a sudden cardiac arrhythmia. Unthinkably, Steve’s father and two brothers also died in their 40s and 50s due to heart disease. Proceeds from the event, along with other fundraising and engagement opportunities throughout the year, go to several awards and programs that directly fund research conducted by the Cardiovascular Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where causes, treatments and prevention of heart disease are studied by world-class researchers and faculty physicians.
