Dr. Audi awarded 106K to study radiation-induced pneumonitis
February 23, 2024
Said Audi, PhD, Professor in the Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, has received a 106K subaward from Columbia University for work on an ongoing NIH-sponsored project titled, "Center for High-Throughput Minimally-Invasive Radiation Biodosimetry."
This project seeks to improve triage for patients at risk of developing pneumonitis after radiation exposure, as well as the efficacy of ACE inhibitors in reducing relevant sequelae. The work is considered central to the CMCRC programmatic goals in that there are currently no FDA-approved biomarkers for anticipating delayed onset pneumonitis as a result of radiation exposure, making early evaluation of therapeutic needs difficult. The project further touts a well-established safety profile and evaluation of clinical therapies (ACE inhibitors) that are readily available in standard healthcare settings, making results immediately relevant to improving patient care. Dr. Audi’s specific contribution focuses on evaluating the efficacy of using SPECT imaging to ascertain lung tissue damage.
Dr. Audi will be joined in this effort by Dr. Anne Clough, Professor in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Marquette University and co-director of the Computational Lung Physiology Laboratory in the MU-MCW Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering.
