BME Undergraduate Researcher Presents Poster at Big East Research Symposium in New York City

March 14, 2023

Last Saturday, during the BIG EAST NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, 55 exceptional undergraduate researchers were having a tournament of their own. Now in its second year, all eleven institutions that comprise the BIG EAST athletic conference faced off in competition featuring research topics that spanned disciplines in the Second Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Marquette Students in stadium at Big East Research Symposium 2023BME undergrad Aine Grady, of Dr. Robert Scheidt’s NeuroMotor Control Laboratory, joined four other researchers and represented Marquette University in the tournament. Her poster titled, “Transfer of Learned Patterns of Grip Coordination Between Rigid and Compliant Objects” focuses on understanding how people learn object manipulation tasks involving their fingers, with the long-term goal of rehabilitating finger dexterity in stroke survivors.

When asked about her experience at the Symposium, Aine was excited to say that being a part of the event was a truly a unique and wonderful experience.

"Meeting undergraduate students involved in research from all the Big East universities, along with their professors, was a unique opportunity to learn about all the interesting projects being worked on in a huge variety of subject areas. The ability to present for three different judges who weren’t in the field of my research during the poster session provided the positive challenge of explaining [my work] in a way for everyone to understand, and getting to see Marquette win the Big East Championship was an added bonus!"

All presenters were invited to attend the NCAA Men's Big East Conference Tournament Final, which placed Xavier University's Musketeers against our very own Marquette Golden Eagles, who dominated the game and came out as the 2023 Big East Conference Champions.
