Dr. Greenberg elected to AAMC's GREAT Steering Committee

January 14, 2025

Headshot of Dr. Adam GreenbergAdam S. Greenberg, PhD, associate professor of  biomedical engineering and associate dean of postdoctoral education and graduate career development, has been elected to serve a three-year term on the Steering Committee of the Group on Research Education and Training (GREAT) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Greenberg’s term began in October of 2024 as one of eight national representatives of the Postdoctoral Training sub-section of GREAT.

The GREAT is the representational body of AAMC for directors and administrators of postdoctoral offices, biomedical graduate (PhD), and MD-PhD programs. The mission of GREAT is to work cross-sectionally to advance initiatives that will strengthen the overall environment and training of the biomedical research workforce, and to continue to work in subsections on projects that are specific to either postdoctoral, graduate, or MD-PhD training. Dr. Greenberg is the latest in a line of MCW leaders who have been elected to serve in this role including former MCW dean of the School of Graduate Studies Dr. Ravi Misra (2017-2020), and former MCW associate deans of postdoctoral education Dr. Julie Tetzlaff (2017-2020) and Dr. Phil Clifford (2002-2009).

Locally, Dr. Greenberg has led MCW’s Office of Postdoctoral Education since 2022 and has forged the path forward on several important initiatives including new administrative protocols for postdoc salary requirements, annual contracts, title conventions, and notice period requirements for termination/resignation, among others.

Under Dr. Greenberg’s leadership, the Postdoc Office recently rolled out new procedures requiring all MCW postdocs to work with their PI to develop a yearly Career Development Plan, ensuring expectations are outlined and updated regularly. Dr. Greenberg also partnered with the MCW Office of Research and the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment to create the MCW Postdoctoral Researcher Seed Grant mechanism to support postdocs in developing into independent research scientists, one of only a few such programs in the nation.
